Frequently Asked Questions

How can I order and pay with a check or money order?
On the checkout page, there is an option for check/money order payment. Select that, print your order page, and mail it together with a check or money order.

We will issue a refund of purchase price and applicable tax, minus a 10% (or $ 10 minimum) restocking fee. Items purchased on sale cannot be returned. See our returns policy.

What is your cancellation policy for subscriptions?
For magazine subscriptions, you can cancel at any time, and we will refund the unused portion of the subscription. There is no cancellation fee.

What is the relationship between Compass Bicycles Ltd. and Bicycle Quarterly?
Compass Bicycles Ltd. is a sister company to Bicycle Quarterly Press. For years, we were frustrated about great components that either were no longer available or were not sold in North America. We finally decided to take things into our own hands and offer these components through Compass Bicycles. Also read our blog entry on this subject.

Do you offer Grand Bois frames and bicycles?
At this time, we do not offer frames or bicycles. Ikuo Tsuchiya of Cycles Grand Bois wants to meet customers in person before designing a bicycle for them. Therefore, to order a Grand Bois, you have to go to his shop in Kyoto (Japan) to place the order.

Technical

Can you tell me whether your fenders fit on my bike?
Please see our requirements for good fender install and model recommendations by tire size, here.

For detailed instructions on how to mount aluminum fenders, please refer to Bicycle Quarterly 34 (Winter 2010)
When you buy fenders from Compass Bicycles, we include a copy of the article.

Will your tires fit my bike?
Even production frames vary a lot from one bike to another. Without seeing the bike, it is almost impossible to say whether a tire will fit. Measure your existing tire, and check how much clearance you have where the tires pass through the frame. This tells you whether you can fit a wider tire. For more information, see our blog post on determining your maximum tire width.

Do your tires run true to size?
We list the actual tire width of the tires we sell, rather than what it says on the package. Tire width varies a little depending on the width of the rims. Also remember that tires stretch a bit during use, and can “grow” by a millimeter or two over time.

What pressure should I run?
Please see our articles on optimizing your tire pressure and minimum tire pressure.

Can you recommend a framebuilder or constructeur for my new bicycle?
Unfortunately, we cannot make such recommendations. Every rider’s needs are different. We recommend reading the bike tests in Bicycle Quarterly to learn more about what different builders have to offer, and where their strengths lie.

Can you help me with a technical question?
Unfortunately, we cannot individual technical questions, unless they are about products we sell. A good resource is the Internet-Bob list Internet-Bob list, where you will find a group of avid riders who may be able to help you
