Bicycle Quarterly

The Passion of Cycling

We started Bicycle Quarterly to tell amazing stories that the mainstream media didn’t cover. Forgotten passes of the Cascade Mountains. Mid-century bikepackers and randonneurs who inspired our own adventures. Spirited rides over long distances. Groundbreaking technical research that would change the cycling world.

During the early 2000s, we explored unpaved mountain passes long before ‘gravel’ became a category. We started the wide-tire revolution when Bicycle Quarterly’s real-road testing showed—contrary to everyone’s beliefs—that wide tires are as fast as narrow rubber. And we invented the term ‘all-road bike’—common today, but never used until then—to describe the bikes we envisioned. Bikes that combined our research into wide tires with our passion for exploring off the beaten path.

It took a decade until our ideas and findings were accepted by the mainstream cycling industry. Meanwhile, Bicycle Quarterly keeps pushing forward. We publish stories you won’t find anywhere else. Rather than relying on established authors, we work with racers and adventurers—and take you right into the action. Our technical articles continue to push the boundaries of our understanding how bicycles work. Our bike and equipment tests are honest, in-depth—and fun to read, whether you’re in the market for a bike or not. Our well-researched articles about cycling history take you to a time when cycling wasn’t just a pastime, but a way of life.

Bicycle Quarterly transcends categories. Road and gravel. Racing and touring. Carbon and steel. We celebrate the passion of cycling in all its forms. Each edition is a 108-page book that you’ll read from cover to cover.
