Remembering Lyli Herse's Birthday

Remembering Lyli Herse's Birthday

Today would have been Lyli Herse’s 91st birthday. And last Friday has been a year from her passing…

… and the 111th birthday of her father, René Herse. They continue to inspire us in so many ways. Today, we just want to remember their smiles and their passion for cycling in all its forms.

Lyli was a friend for so long that it’s hard to believe she’s gone. Until the very end, she rode her home trainer, but she told us that she dreamt of cycling in the mountains.

We miss her! She passed on her family’s legacy to us, and she told us that her father would have been happy to see so many people passionate about rides and adventures again. Together, let’s keep their spirit alive!

I never met her, but she was and is an inspiration to me.

She was quite a lady. Thank you for introducing her to us otherwise we may never have heard of her. Happy birthday Lyli!
Also, may we inquire about the fate of Madame Porthault?

Last I heard, Madame Porthault is still with us – amazingly, considering she’s now 105 years old. However, she no longer lives alone, on her own, but she’s moved to an assisted living home. Sadly, I can’t just call her on the phone like I used to, to ask some random question about Rene Herse history or to chat about cyclotouring.

I have mentioned this previously, but will repeat. In 1971 my former wife and I showed up at the Rene Herse shop on our 1963 Jack Taylor touring tandem. Lyli Herse was there, and was so gracious and helpful, that I feel grateful to this day.

This is quite touching, good of you to write this in her memory.
